Termites are the pest Omani villa owners fear most, and for good reason. Subterranean termites tunnel up from the soil and feed on anything containing cellulose — door frames, skirting, wooden furniture, ceiling timber and even stored paper. Because they work from the inside out, a colony can cause significant damage long before you see a single insect. Knowing the early warning signs is the best protection you have.
1. Mud tubes on walls and foundations
The clearest sign is thin, pencil-width tubes of dried mud running up foundation walls, pillars or inside cupboards. Termites build these tunnels to travel between the soil and their food while staying hidden and moist. If you find one, gently break a small section — if it is rebuilt within a few days, the colony is active.
2. Hollow or blistered wood
Tap door frames, skirting and wooden furniture. If the wood sounds hollow or the surface looks blistered and papery, termites may have eaten it away from within, leaving only a thin shell. Skirting that crumbles when pressed is a strong warning sign.
3. Discarded wings and swarmers
At certain times of year, winged termites (swarmers) leave the colony to start new ones. You may see them around windows and lights, or find small piles of identical discarded wings on windowsills and floors. Finding wings indoors means a colony is nearby — often within the building itself.
4. Tight doors and buckling surfaces
As termites tunnel through frames and introduce moisture, doors and windows can start to stick, and skirting, parquet or laminate can buckle. These changes are easy to blame on humidity, but combined with any other sign they deserve a proper inspection.
Why Omani villas are especially at risk
Many villas sit on sandy soil, often beside gardens, farmland or open ground that holds termite colonies. Irrigation and landscaping keep the soil around foundations moist — exactly the conditions termites need. New builds are vulnerable too if the ground was not treated before construction. This is why a protective soil barrier is so valuable here.
What to do if you spot the signs
Do not disturb the area more than needed, and resist spraying it yourself — that can scatter the colony and make professional treatment harder. Instead, arrange an inspection. A technician confirms whether the activity is live, locates the entry points and installs a continuous chemical barrier around the foundation. Caught early, termites are very manageable; left alone, they are one of the most expensive problems a villa can face.
